Australia and New Zealand Tall Ships Festival(s) 2013

Sailonline is delighted to be continuing its association with The Tall Ships Races organised by Sail Training International and 2013 will see SOLers able to race tall ships both in the traditional European summer races and in the Sydney to Auckland Tall Ships Regatta 2013 in the autumn. Very exciting!

For any SOLers in or going to be in Australia/New Zealand please read the newsletter - apparently there are trainee berths available on local and visiting ships so... get applying! To have someone associated with SOL actually on board one of the tall ships for this unique festival in the S Hemisphere would be fantastic.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust ship, Lord Nelson, who has appeared on SOL racing screens for the past two years will be participating and right now is on her way round the world to Australia. Follow her progress here (she is now in Durban, RSA.

I just posted this on the Facebook page for Sailonline and realised that it might be good info for everyone, so should be posted here too!

"In the first year of buddying with Sail Training International we created five polars, one for each of the classes of Tall Ship sailing. Then discovered that no-one knew how to modify the SYC Ranking program to allow for proper ranking. Most competitive types opted for the Class A Large polar anyway, as they wanted to beat the big guys in reality, others enjoyed sailing a different "type" for the different races of that year... but no races were ranked. Last year we went for the Class A Large so that races could be ranked for SYC rankings and apart from one cloud-server hiccup, all went well. Consensus has been that the Cruise in Company (where the IRL ships just mooch from A to B via as many points as they like) is not a race and not fun... so...for 2013 .. we will soon need to decide which of our class A polars to choose, and because this year sees TS Races in the Med, the Baltic and Australia, we are cutting out the Euro CiC!!!"

Hi Sailors

If the game engine will allow us to still select from and race any one of 5 polars I will be able to export the positioning from the website each morning and can sort and post each Tall Ship category running result. This is not at all difficult given what I have done with the race results over the last few months.

Maybe the game engine will not be able to upload my category sorts, and will only run SYC ranking on the A Type, but it may be interesting having 5 sets of postitioning posted to the forum each day? Effectively having 5 races in 1!

Just a suggestion.

Just had another thought:) If one of our more Salty Salts can give me a handicapping factor based on the 5 boats we will be able to provide winners for both Line Honours and Handicap!

Just had a quick look at The Tall Ships Race 2011 - Stavanger to Halmstad and its easy to sort on the categories.

Jawz - in the Tall Ships Races of 2013 we will not be racing five boats, we will be racing one boat so that the server/SYC ranking can function well.

As we are buddied with Sail Training International we need to run our races without experimentation.

HOWEVER

I have always loved racing on SOL where there has been boat choice - many of you I am sure will remember the IMSYC races where Jakob's students designed the boats we chose. But until such time as we have the ability, within the server, to agree handicaps and have SYC members properly ranked, we have to accept that many SOLers just won't sail.

Some of us are happy to sail "just for fun" but a great number only want to sail if rankings count.

So.. may I suggest that you come up with a weekend course, a selection of boats (that could be seen on-course at the same time) and we run a "just for fun" Jawz Regatta?

76Trombones has done a lot of work on handicapping in SOL in the past, as I am sure you may recall, so perhaps you and he can work together on this?

Good Idea. Not sure about the name tho :), that vain Im not, I think. Right now Im liaising with WINSTON_4 and NZL Scotsman regarding the establishing of handicapping for our Tall Ships so that this function is sorted too.

Lets open the suggestion up to the SOLers and ask for ideas for a short series of Tall Ships races in the future!

Jaws which "SOL Admin guys" are you talking with please?

There are several previous discussion on Sailonline about handicapping.. this one is probably the most comprehensive.

If you search sailonline.org to find others, perhaps you can bring them all together to make a coherent whole for the future... it is important to build on past experience/debate, I think.

As for more Tall Ships Races - we already have a fabulous Shackleton Series still waiting to be raced!

Surely part of the "Handicapping" is in the choice of boat, which is derived from observing the polar and the expected weather. To be so insistent upon "points" that a SOLer will NOT race where there are no 'points' to be won, indicates to me a complete lack of interest in sailing, and a total concentration on "winning". May I suggest TV poker instead? Sort of "money where the mouth is".
If this posting is considered to be 'intemperate', you may delete it.........
If it breaks, it's not strong enough--if it doesn't, it's too heavy.

WHICH TALL SHIP FOR 2013 SEASON?

OK folks - rather than insist on SOLers sailing the classic Class A Tall Ship polar which has been our staple for the first two seasons of tall ships racing, you may now VOTE HERE to choose which ship Sailonline will sail for the 2013 Season. We shall be racing in the Med, in the Baltic and from Australia to New Zealand before the year is out!

For the third year, Sailonline is delighted to be the virtual partner of Sail Training International for its season of tall ships racing, this year will see races both in Europe and the Southern Hemisphere. The Tall Ships Races 2013, presented by Szczecin, organised by Sail Training International are being run on the waters of the Baltic Sea and Sailonline's virtual races will again mirror the schedules of the real ones as closely as possible.

This virtual sailing experience runs hand in hand with Sail Training International's mission - the development and education of young people through the sail training experience, regardless of nationality, culture, religion, gender or social background. Sail Training International and Sailonline both count heavily on volunteer support with financial gain excluded from the equation.

Sailing a tall ship, whether real or virtual - making navigational decisions in real wind conditions - can be a surprising experience and make one wonder how sailors of a bygone era managed so successfully to sail the globe. This is truly an educational experience, both for sailors of modern boats and for 'wannabe' Salts of all ages!

There are four classes of Tall Ship in the real races, ranging from the biggest Class A Square Rigged ships of more than 40m in length, through to the smallest sloop. For the first race Sailonline will be sailing a Clipper with a performance polar derived from published data.

Race 1, from Aarhus to Helsinki will be open for practice soon.

Welcome to the third of four virtual Tall Ships Races in European waters which are concurrently being organized in-real-life by Sail Training International . This third race is from Antwerpen back up the North Sea to Stavanger in Norway – another proper tall ship training adventure of circa 450nm, online again in Sailonline’s classic Clipper 240.

Lake Ontario 300 Challenge 2026

Lake Ontario Offshore Racing (LOOR) welcomes Sailonline sailors to a second virtual version of a race in their annual series, and for the sixth year in succession the LO300. As the name implies, the LO300 is a 300nm offshore race across the length and breadth of Lake Ontario, from and back to Port Credit YC. This year, for the first time, we will be racing the 300nm circuit in Sun Fast 3200s. As usual, there is an overall prize for the SOLer who best bosses Lake Ontario over the two races hosted by Sailonline, this LO300 and the Susan Hood raced back in May, and this year also the race and the Susan Hood count towards the title of Super Buddy 2026; so, let the competition be fierce!

Cross the Convergence 2026 - Sao Tomé to Tristan

The fifth race of our series of ocean voyages across the World’s convergence zones takes us back south down the Atlantic from Sao Tomé on the Equator to Tristan da Cunha on the edge of the Roaring Forties. It’s 2500nm; in your path the Benguela winds and current along the south west African coast, and behind that the St Helena High stretching halfway to South America. So, mind where you go in your Volvo OD65 version 3 (based on sampled real-life race data by kroppyer)!

New Ice Age 2026 - Neumayer Station to Scott Base


For a second-half of long-distance ice-boating, we take our DNs to Antarctica for a circumnavigation of that continent in two legs clockwise, in harmony with the prevailing winds (such as there are), beginning with a race from Germany’s Neumayer Station to New Zealand’s Scott Base. It’s about 3500nm, which, if there’s wind at all, should, well-wrapped in your DN-cockpits, not take you much more than five days. And remember: charts down here are unreliable – what is land and what is ice?!
